Abstract

Effective integration of ICT into teaching and learning forms an integral component of the Malaysian Smart School innovative concept implemented ten years ago.  However, rapid developments of applications of ICT mean that a great deal is now possible, yet there remains a considerable gap between the availability of these applications and the realities of the classroom.  Teachers need to augment their skills regularly, if they are to stay abreast of developments in their profession and remain confident in using ICT.  At the same time, constructivist principles have had extensive eects on learning and curriculum design.  In the training of future teachers in an ICT based course, and inspired by a constructivist education philosophy, a model was developed, aiming at familiarizing teacher trainees with various applications of ICT as a tool that can trigger constructivist teaching learning practices.  This endeavor at Sultan Idris Education University, Malaysia is reported in the paper.  It is argued that engaging future teachers in constructivist learning enables them to reach greater understandings of the potential of applications of ICT in challenging traditional pedagogy.  The way in which constructivist theories shaped the designing of lessons using various applications of ICT are explored. The article delineates practical considerations and specific commentary on the effectiveness and importance of ICT in addressing problems to engage students in learning.
